Field (2007)
An interactive LED Display on 55 Prince Street, NYC Created by Emily Conrad, Todd Holoubek, and Jeff Galusha. Field is an interactive storefront and light installation consisting of 2 miles of wire, 960 LEDs, 4 IR sensors, and 1/2 pound of beeswax, all of which spans over 31 feet inside the historic storefront in SoHo. Each LED dangles on a thin black wire and has been dipped in beeswax. The LEDs stand alone and are controlled individually. Up close, they look nearly identical to fireflies. The interactivity occurs with pedestrians; as someone comes up to take a closer look, the lights rapidly animate.

We put together a movie of it here:

Undercurrent (2007)
I did this installation up in Adams, MA just behind the Mass MOCA. It was part of a festival to honor the Housatonic River. The intention was to help visualize the natural currents within the river.

In the Loop (2006)
When I was working with GlowLab, we (me, Jeff Galusha and Marc Parees) were invited to participate in a show at Art Interactive. The gallery is located in Cambridge, MA and the show was an exploration of Psychogeography. So we asked local to take us on a walk. We took notes, interviewed them, and ended up with a fun floormap that told a story at each intersection.

Heartbeat (2005)
This heartbeat sconce (gracefully hacked from Ikea) is designed for ambient communication. It’s purpose is to be installed in the home, and is activated by cellphone. Partners can let each other know when they will be due home by sending a text to the lamp (30 = 30 minutes), and the lamp will respond with a slow beat, gradually getting faster as the time counts down and their partner returns home. The homebound partner can respond by touching the lamp, which will in turn send a (pre-programmed) message to the remote partner.

ElectroSquash (2004)
A multimedia performance driven by two brothers equipped with biometric sensors and playing a game of squash. With Jamie Allen and Matt Culliford. This battle was so much fun to watch.

Bureau of Dr. Goodman (2004)
Jeff and I took an old cabinet from our apartment and turned it into a storytelling machine! Each drawer was tied to a magnetic sensor and would offer visitors part of the murder mystery story from a different character’s vantage point.

USB Locket (2004)
USB locket handmade from silver and glass. I made this to store all my ITP projects, and still wear it lovingly. It even made it to a few blogs.

How does it work? Find out here:

Sculpture (2003)
This piece, my favorite from the Cosmos series, represents my first work in aluminum. Aluminum has a bad reputation, everything from causing Alzheimer’s to being cheap enough to cover a slice of 99¢ pizza. But for me, aluminum will always be a beautifully fluid material to work with.
